About Social and Environmental Performance

Social and environmental performance management (SEPM) is a way of doing business that puts people and the planet at the center of every strategic and operational decision. SEPM is not opposed to profit—in fact, it is common for businesses with strong SEPM to have strong financial performance as well.

You can’t manage what you don’t measure and you can’t improve what you don’t track. Social and environmental performance assessment is the foundation for achieving impact.

At Cerise+SPTF, we know that strong financial performance does not necessarily translate into benefits for customers, employees, and the environment. We also know that having a social mission is not the same thing as achieving a social mission.

By putting customers, employees, and the environment at the center of strategic and operational decisions, we increase the likelihood that products and services will do no harm and provide positive value to customers and communities.

  • Build customer loyalty with better-designed products
  • Attract and retain employees through well-designed HR practices
  • Gain shareholder trust through transparent disclosure of practices using the accepted and standardized framework
  • Strengthen brand reputation
  • Mitigate reputation risk through strong consumer and environmental protection practices
  • Improve overall performance through better informed customers, transparent practices and motivated workers

SEPM is important for any company that has or wants to pursue a triple bottom-line strategy: financial, social, and environmental.

The history of the SPI initiative

SPI - Social Performance Indicators - was born in 2001. Cerise and its founding members built the first version of SPI tool in collaboration with microfinance institutions and sector professionals. Our objective: to help microfinance institutions achieve their social mission. The fourth version of the tool, SPI4, was released in 2016, to be fully aligned with the Universal Standards for Social Performance Management (version 2.0). In 2020, SPI4 went digital with the creation of the SPI Online platform. In 2023, Cerise+SPTF updated SPI Online and launched SPI5, now aligned with the most updated version of the Universal Standards for Social and Environmental Performance Management (version 3.0).
