Cerise+SPTF and its partners have developed an environmental policy template that can be adapted to each financial service provider (FSP) to manage its environmental risks, improve its environmental performance, and strengthen the resilience of its customers. The environmental policy makes it possible to integrate the environment into the analysis and monitoring of credit operations where the activities financed may generate pollution and, above all, face increased climate vulnerability.
This environmental policy formalizes an institutional commitmentāfrom the board of directors to the points of serviceāto manage environmental risks and support customers in best practices, in order to enhance the institution's credibility and responsibility over time, as well as strengthen its customers' resilience to climate risks.
A policy template to be adapted...
The template is to be adapted and customized to the profile, portfolio, and level of advancement of each FSP, then developed iteratively and collectively, from top management to field teams and, where relevant, with clients.
The template serves as practical guidanceānot as a rigid standardāand can be usefully accompanied by support for prioritizing and sequencing implementation. Although it offers numerous examples (indicators, procedures, project ideas), it is essential to proceed one step at a time: identify a core set of priority objectives based on your maturity in environmental performance management, test, adjust, and then expand over the various planning and review cycles. The objective is to make it a driver of resilience and inclusive growth, through rigorous monitoring and appropriate responses to environmental issues.
ā¦and complemented with practical appendices.
In addition, this template is enhanced with real-life examples from the field (testimonials and practices implemented) and contextualized examples to help teams put it into practice.
It comes with five adaptable appendices:
- A: Exclusion list template,
- B: Environmental risk assessment & management template,
- C: Environmental policy implementation plan template,
- D: Environmental indicator monitoring table template,
- E: Customer environmental action plan monitoring sheet template
These tools are described and ready to use in the policy, to be customized according to your context and portfolio.
Many thanks to our partners in the field!
These resources were made possible thanks to the fieldwork carried out by consultants who are members of the SEPM Pros Network, and particularly by Sylvestre Fonton HONVOU, Daniel Akomabou DASSOU, Anthony DA COSTA, Gilles DA COSTA, and AmƩlia GREENBERG. Their work has helped to anchor these practical resources in operational reality.
